Springtime!  

Spring is here!  Potted plants are a great wee gift, especially for mother's day.  Buy your terra cotta pots at your local garden center or dollarstore, and fill with your favourite soil and seeds, herbs or plants.

DecoArt's Patio Paint

My favourite acrylic paint for terracotta pots is DecoArt's Patio Paint.  I love this paint as it creates perfect dots straight from the bottle, no need to thicken or thin it.  It is formulated to handle moisture and water and is suited for the porous terracotta concrete, wood and outdoor surfaces.
Purchase at Michaels, some dollar stores, or from Deco art directly.

If you want to have edible plants in the pots, I recommend not using a sealant on the pot.

Dotting with kids 

Want to dot with your kids or grandkids?  Here a few tips to help you!

1. Dotting stones are great for kids, as they are small and do not take a lot of attention time to finish.  Plus picking their own stones are part of the process!  
2. Make sure you have water on hand to wipe off the acrylic paint if it gets on clothes.
3. Roll up their sleeves :) 
4. Dotting is a new concept for kids, as they are used to using a paint brush, so some may need more instruction on how to dot.  
5. Bring more stones or things to dot than needed, as they like to dot fast!! 
6. Dotting wooden cutouts for the dollar store are great to dot with kids
7. Allow for 15-30mins for dotting. Their attention span can be minimal.  
8. If you child likes to rush through the dotting, then do a simple guided design together.  This will help them slow down looking for the numbered tool, and will take more time and care in choosing colours.

Under 5/6 years - they like to use the tools as a brush, so consistent supervision is needed (although I have seen a 4 year old do an amazing mandala design).  Bugs on a stone are great design for this age.  Use medium dotting tools as young ones like bigger dots and will ruin your small sized dotting tools.  
5/6 to 8 years - Stone bugs and flowers are great for this age too, but if you want to do a mandala design, make sure you guide them through each step of a mandala design.  This age has less patience, so any design is often rushed through.  Stones are recommended with this age too, or small canvases. 
8 years and older - They get the concept of dotting and layout and are able to make their own designs. Some are less confident in their ability (just like us adults) so start with a simple design or a bug will help build their confidence in using the tools.

 For bugs, just add two dots for eyes and a little nose. Dot the body in a random way or with lines in an colours. Seal with your favourite sealer when dry.

​The paint comes in cute easy screw top container, to minimize mess and makes it easy to paint anywhere.

(Stones are not included)

Easy to clean: Simply wipe with a paper towel, after each use. For built up paint, simply dip into freshly boiled water for 10 seconds. Use a cream cleanser to remove any stains (use sparingly). Do not use any soap, alcohol, baby wipes or solvents to clean, as they will make the tools split.
