Tips

Christmas  ornaments
Paint: Multi-surface Paint only
Where to buy: Any Christmas store, craft store or dollarstore
Type of material: Ornaments can come in a variety of materials and designs (see below)
Sealant: No sealant, as sealants may show though or dull the frosted glass
How to hold: Use the container that the decorations come in or use a glass/mug
Where to sell: Local markets, consignment stores and local stores (You can even ask to set up a small tree at your local physio!)
Price range: Think of how much you would pay for a handmade ornament? I like to make my ornaments fast with simple designs, so I can sell for cheaper.

What is your art and dot experience? I have been involved in the arts for as long as I can remember. My parents were professional artists and had a gallery in Coombs, BC,Canada for many years. Professional artists in my family (both sides) go back many generations. I have tried many mediums such as soap stone carving, drawing, painting, silk screening, sewing and even weaving. I was also a professional makeup artist for many years. I started dotting I think in 2017 after a friend introduced me to it. I had already started rock painting as a form of pain management. So after taking a few classes from the Otauna patterns I was hooked.
How has dotting changed your life? Dotting has changed my life in such a massive way! I have Ehle’s Danlos syndrome and Behcets Autoimmune. I have always been open about this as I want others to know that art is an amazing form of the healing team. It takes the mind away from the painful days. Living with chronic medical conditions can be very isolating and depressing. I have now a new art family that give me joy every day. For this I am eternally grateful.
What is your favourite dotting tip or saying? My favourite tip for dotting is all about the paint. A good smooth consistency is almost always going to be your friend.
What have you discovered about yourself since you started dotting? I have found that I love to teach and share my knowledge that I have learned along my own journey. If it can help one person then it makes my day. I love to make videos as it is easy and does not require much effort other than hitting record.
What is your favourite dotting equipment? I have tried many tools over the years. When I found the DIY tool set I never looked back. The variation in sizes is just perfect. I like that there are no gaps in tool sizes so I can always make the size I need
What is your favourite item to dot? My favourite item to dot on must be the 3.7 inch stone I make from the Happy Dotting company moulds. It is the perfect size. In addition to that I will dot on many other sizes and surfaces. I love the 12x12 canvas too.
What is some advice in selling your art? The best advice I can share is make the item look great in your pictures. Take the time to stage your item with good lighting and if you need to use an app to adjust the brightness etc then I would. You only get a few seconds to draw in your audience. Good lighting and a bright clear image.
What piece of advice you would give your beginner? Watch videos on dotting if you don’t have access to in person lessons. I would say that really focus on your foundation dots more than anything. Learning to keep alignment without grid lines will go along way in your journey.
What is your favourite paints to dot with? My favourite paints to use …..well I love the metallic Arteza acrylic paints. They do have to be thinned down and the rich colours are so pretty. I can get plump dots with them that give a beautiful depth. Next to that I love the dazzling metallics by DecoArt and the colour shift paints by FolkArt.
