"Don’t stress over dots. You’ll live and you’ll learn as you go. Sometimes your design or colours come out looking in a way you didn’t imagine and it can be disappointing, but soon you’ll know what works or doesn’t"  - Lucie
What is your art and dot experience?  Besides starting dot art a few years ago, I had no actual experience prior to that! I only ever wished that I had some kind of art hobby but never felt like I had my “own thing” or that I was good enough.
When and how did you get into dotting? My mom started doing dot art as a hobby late in 2017 after watching YouTube videos, and sent me a canvas of one of her dot mandalas for Christmas. I was so mesmerized by its beauty that my heart may have literally skipped a beat. I felt this urge to try painting one myself, so I went to the local dollar store to purchase some supplies.
Why do you love dotting? Dotting is an escape from my overactive brain. Dotting helps me relax, while also making me feel excited and happy. The right colour combinations and dot placements result in a feeling of euphoria.
What have you discovered about yourself since you started dotting? I’m very talented! Not trying to sound conceited here, but I’ve always wanted an art hobby, and now I feel I’ve surpassed dotting and even ventured into trying other artsy things such as carving plaster stones and making my own moulds.
What is your favourite dotting equipment? Henna cones filled with acrylic paint are my go-to dotting tools nowadays. They save me so much time by not having to dip a tool into paint each time I need a dot. I also love having a variety of cones filled already so when I need certain colours, I don’t have to spend a bunch of time mixing paints. My paints are always ready to go, and I can easily grab 20 colours if needed. Total time saver when I’m busy being a mom all day with minimal time to paint these days!
What is your favourite item to dot? As much as I love plaster stones for being perfect in symmetry, natural river rocks are my absolute favourite! Round ones, heart-shaped ones, and smooth flat ones for painting animals on. They’re just so uniquely carved out and tumbled by nature.
Do you sell dotting items/art?  I sell a variety of dotting supplies and my art, of course. The most popular items in my shop are paint cones, carved crater plaster stones, and DIY mini canvas dot mandala kits. The kits come with a 30-min YouTube video tutorial to follow along with and are great for starting out or just a fun paint night with friends and family. I sell things like paint cones and crater stones (I carved these and made moulds from them, so they’re exclusive to my Etsy shop) because I love to share!
What is some advice in selling your art? Social media and selling online is where it’s at! Placing your art into a little store where someone else does the selling is nice because it’s effortless, but the real reward is knowing you caught someone’s eye by posting a picture or video that you took of it yourself. Etsy is a great place to start too, because even if you don’t have your own following or customers yet, Etsy brings a lot of traffic to your shop.
What is your biggest lesson you learnt while dotting? Get some quality paint. The cheap, runny craft acrylic is a good way to start, but it’s really not even that much cheaper than an artist’s acrylic. My favourite paint is Amsterdam Acrylics Standard Series. They come in tubes and I can squeeze them straight into my paint cones. They’re thicker in consistency so I don’t have to add any mediums or worry about my paint dripping because it stays put.

How has dotting changed your life? I never imagined having an art business and it goes to show that anyone can do it! Selling art that I’ve created is very empowering and motivating.
What piece of advice you would give a beginner? Dotting is not a race. I often post videos on my social media accounts that are sped up 10, 20x. The real speed is very slow. It can take hours to finish one stone, so don’t be discouraged thinking you’re too slow or doing something wrong.
